THE LIFE OF DAIRY COWS

Dairy cows (picture 1) are reared for the production of milk. These cows need to give birth to calves on a regular basis, so that they can produce the necessary milk. The calves are usually separated from their mothers soon after birth, and the milk is then used for human consumption.

Dairy cows can produce a huge amount of milk. On average, a cow in a dairy herd will produce 28-30 bottles of milk per day. Just think how many bowls of breakfast cereal that would fill!

Farmers need to be attentive to dairy cows which are producing a lot of milk because they can be prone to many diseases (particularly in their feet and udders).

In order to produce so much milk, dairy cows need a high-energy diet and a lot of water. Cows are social animals (picture 2) and they like to have contact both with other animals and with humans. The cow's housing and machines (picture 3) used to milk the cow must be kept clean and disinfected regularly.

Sick animals must be treated immediately and be separated from the others.

You are now ready to rear cows-enjoy this game!
